ARISE Africa Workshop: AI in Disaster Risk Reduction - Southern Africa Launch

Background

In October 2024, ARISE Africa was launched at the annual Africa Region Platform held in Windhoek, Namibia. As part of the effort to grow awareness of ARISE and UNDRR, the ARISE Africa Secretariat determined to convene three workshops on the impact of AI in disaster risk reduction in the key regions of East Africa (Kenya); Southern Africa (South Africa) and West Africa (West Africa). The first workshop, focusing on Mining and Energy, will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from June 12-13, 2025.

Target Participants

It is expected that participants at these events will be comprised of private sector current and prospective ARISE members, public sector, research and NGO DRR stakeholders and selected financial sector representatives.

Key Outcomes

• Introduce ARISE and UNDRR to more private sector stakeholders in Africa while raising awareness about the private sector’s role in DRR
• Increase understanding of how AI tools are being used to address DRR
