Mission

ECLAC, or CEPAL in Spanish, is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations.

It was founded with the purpose of coordinating actions directed toward the economic and social development of Latin America, and of reinforcing economic ties among countries and with other nations of the world. It provides studies and research, advocacy and info dissemination, and organizes workshops, symposia and seminars.

DRR activities

Achievement 1:

ECLAC received one official request to conduct a disaster assessment from the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), for a DaLA on Hurricane Melissa. This is the most devastating hurricane in the history of Jamaica 

Achievement 2:

ECLAC received three official requests for technichal cooperation: (a) two from Colombia’s National Natural Parks (PNN) to strengthen disaster assessment capacities in the environmental sector. One was alredy published; (b) another request from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage of Chile, which asked for the development of a protocol for the visual inspection of heritage infrastructure.

Voluntary Commitments

The organization has no registered commitments.

The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
